Coba Mayan Ruins is a relatively new area for tourism.
It remained buried under the thick vegetation of the Yucatán jungle until the late 1970’s. Known as the capital city of the pre-columbian civilization, it was the center of a dense network of Sac-bes (Mayan roads) that made it the military and commercial power house of the North-Eastern Yucatán Peninsula.
FOR NOW....YOU ARE STILL ALLOWED TO CLIMB THESE RUINS AND THE VIEW ON TOP IS SPECTACULAR!
This area is best explored with a rented bicycle and your private guide to show you around and tell you all about the history of the area.
After visiting the ancient ruins, he will take you to one of the three underground cavern pools for a swim! These ancient cenotes were only recently opened to the outside world and made available to people by wooden stairways with platforms for easy access. This makes them a perfect hideaway to cool off and enjoy the mineral formations after visiting the ruins in the sun. When you are satisfied and ready to get back, you will be dropped off at your hotel.
Discovering the Mayan Ruins is an adventure unto itself, but also a great idea for something different to do with the kids, to relax on a hot summer day, or as an alternative if the sea is too choppy for regular snorkeling!
Any adventurous person who can ride a bicycle and has a curiosity about the Mayan Civilization.
