CHICHEN ITZA MAYAN RUINS
The Maya name "Chichen Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza. "Itzá" is the name of an ethnic-lineage group that gained political and economic dominance of the northern peninsula. One possible translation for Itza is "enchanter (or enchantment) of the water". No doubt, these mayan ruins have enchanted visitors for years. They are very large and impressive.
PLEASE NOTE: Tourism has become very popular at this site and CLIMBING UP THE RUINS IS PROHIBITED. If what you really want is to climb up and have a look around at a spectacular mayan ruins site WITHOUT THE CROWDS, you should see our Tour of COBA Mayan Ruins!
Chichen Itza is located about 2.5 to 3 hours to the West of Cancun along a toll road. The northern Yucatán Peninsula is arid, and the rivers in the interior all run underground. There are two large, natural sink holes, called "cenotes" that could have provided plentiful water year round at Chichen, making it attractive for settlement. Of the two cenotes, the "Cenote Sagrado" or "Sacred Cenote" (also variously known as the Sacred Well or Well of Sacrifice), is the most famous. After a walking tour of the ruins, you are encouraged to go for a swim to cool off in this unique underground swimming pool.
Discovering the Mayan Ruins is an adventure unto itself, but also a great idea for something different to do with the kids, to relax on a hot summer day, or as an alternative if the sea is too choppy for regular snorkeling!
Any adventurous person who has a curiosity about the Mayan Civilization.
